The actor Park Bo Gum had an interview. He was smiling and contacting his eyes. For questions that needed some thoughts, he looked thinking seriously. He was an actor who makes people feel good.
Park Bo Gum played the role of the prince Lee Yeong in KBS ‘Moonlight Drawn By Clouds’. He delivered emotions of a guy to a woman he loves, a friend he trusts and his dad he feels sorry for.
Even after the drama ended, Park Bo Gum is still gaining much popularity. But he said, “it would’ve been better if I had prepared more.” His words heightened people’s expectations for his future progress.
Q. Your drama was successful, so you even got special vacation.
Park Bo Gum: I went to the Philippines and the local fans recognized me saying that they watched the drama. I thought, “So many people watched the drama,” and felt so grateful. I feel sorry that I couldn’t say hello to every fan because of safety issues. Of course, many fans just looked into my eyes without taking pictures with their phones. If I were them, I might have wanted to take pictures of celebrities like Song Jung Ki. They were so kind.
Q. You must have felt your popularity during the fan signature meeting in Kyeongbok Palace.
Park Bo Gum: At first, I heard that 200 people were coming so I thought, “It’s a small meeting.” I didn’t imagine that many people would come. I felt grateful that so many people loved the drama. I felt empty after the drama, but thanks to the fans I could feel good.
Q. Why did you feel empty?
Park Bo Gum: I really like the character Lee Yeong. In particular, during the last episode, I felt sad when I heard, “Here comes the king,” wearing the king’s clothes. Junkyuk (Eunuch Jang) also said, “I raised you since you were young, and now you have become a king.” I felt that I still had many weaknesses. I might have done better if I played this role later.
Q. People were divided after watching the last episode. What about you?
Park Bo Gum: I thought that it could be a sad ending since the prince Hyomyung was a real person. But the original story was fiction. The drama ‘Moonlight Drawn By Clouds’ was fiction based on fiction. Actually, staffs said it would have been much sadder if Lee Yeong died.
Q. It was your first Korean historical drama. Weren’t you worried about it?
Park Bo Gum: I wanted to play a role in Korean historical dramas. So, at first, I was just excited to be in ‘Moonlight Drawn By Clouds.’ But I felt more burden as more people were cast. As I read the script, I felt more responsibility. It was difficult to play the role of Lee Yeong at first. I couldn’t get the character right away. But I liked that I could wear lots of beautiful Hanbok. I even got the nickname, ‘Lee Yeoung, the fashion star.’
Q. I heard that you love Hanbok.
Park Bo Gum: If it were not in the drama, I wouldn’t be able to wear such beautiful Hanbok. We don’t wear Hanbok usually even during national holidays.
Q, Did you watch other dramas to get the character?
Park Bo Gum: I watched other dramas. But the director said, “Don’t compare with other dramas and just concentrate on Lee Yeong. He is different from other princes. I also learned a lot from senior actors. In particular, Kim Seung Soo gave me lots of advice. Moreover, Lim Ju Hwan from the same agency explained me how to wear Hanbok properly in details. He also monitored me and showed me some captured photos of me in awkward clothing. (Laughter)
Q. Then when did you started to have confidence about the character?
Park Bo Gum: During the scene where I fell into a hole. I kept filming this scene over and over again. I was not satisfied since I couldn’t get the character completely. I think the director also thought, “This will not do.” (Laughter) Fortunately, we could film the scene again because he had enough time.
Q. Yoojung and you showed positive chemistry.
Park Bo Gum: She has good experience with historical dramas. So she helped me a lot with monitoring. As we worked together, I could read her mind looking at her eyes. She knows how to show her emotions. I learned a lot from her.
Q. How was it to do romance drama with her?
Park Bo Gum: Some might think that it was a bit cheesy. But I liked the lines. I particularly like the line, “I’m Lee Yeong.” I was worried if I could deliver this line well. So I practiced this line by recording my voice.
Q. You had good chemistry with everyone. In particular, the line ‘Are you Byungyeon?’ resonated in many people’s mind.
Park Bo Gum: I got very emotional then and concentrated on the situation as Lee Yeong. Many thoughts hovered around my mind. Is he going to betray me? Is our friendship over?
Q. Many people compliment about you. I heard that you visited the studio even on the day you don’t have work.
Park Bo Gum: I went to cheer up Cha Tae Hyun. In my opinion, I think I’m good at helping the make-up staffs. I can just get what they want by looking into their eyes. It was fun to help them.
Q. Many say that you are kind. Don’t you feel burdened?
Park Bo Gum: My father said, “10 minus 1 is 0.” It means that even if you do good things 10 times, it is no use when you do some bad thing once. But it doesn’t mean that I think, “I have positive image, so I always need to be careful about what I’m doing.’ I don’t want to frame myself. I just lived an ordinary life for the past 24 years. I just want to be more willing to listen to many people and be cautious about what I’m doing.
Q. Tell me your experience of deviation.
Park Bo Gum: It was when I went to Cebu recently. Everyone went to a Korean restaurant. But I felt disappointed that we’re eating Korean food there. So with Dongyeon, I went to a local restaurant secretly.
Q. Is that deviation?
Park Bo Gum: I really had fun.
Q. You are really innocent. (Laughter) What characters do you want to play in the future?
Park Bo Gum: I want to wear school uniforms. I want to do something like the movie ‘Our Times.’ After releasing the OST song ‘My One,’ I also thought about doing something related to music. I learned playing cello in ‘Cantabile’ and Go in ‘Reply 1988.’ In ‘Moonlight Drawn by Clouds,’ I learned horse riding and Geomungo. It’s fun to learn new things. If I get to wear school uniforms, I might be able to learn how to solve math equations. (Laughter)
